Gold nanoparticles have emerged as a versatile platform for biomedical applications due to their unique properties, including high surface area, ease of synthesis, and ability to be functionalized with various biological molecules. Conjugating antibiotics with gold nanoparticles has shown promise in enhancing efficacy and reducing the side effects of traditional antibiotics.
Kanamycin, an aminoglycoside antibiotic, has been effectively used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections. However, resistance to kanamycin and other antibiotics is a growing problem, necessitating the development of more effective treatment strategies.
Gold nanoparticles serve as a stable platform, potentially enhancing the drug's bioavailability and interaction with bacterial cells. In this programme, you will learn the basics of antibiotics, synthesise kanamycin-conjugated gold nanoparticles, and test your products on bacteria with conferred resistance.
